Mug: Extraordinarily Eyed Fish Observed in The Pacific, 1776 (Colored Inner & Handle)

High quality ceramic mug from our Sublime Sea Dwellers collection.
Features extraordinarily eyed fish observed in The Pacific in voyages of exploration during the 1700s and early 1800s.
Admire fish with huge eyes such as Tilefish,Butterfish and Gurnard.
The artwork is inspired by the original scientific illustrations of the period. The extraordinary forms are due to the fact that the artists would often work back in Europe from quick notes and sketches made by the crew or scientists on the voyages.
The banner on the design is evocative of those used on antique maps and natural history illustrations. The year 1776 is on the banner as on 25th December 1776 Captain James Cook (on his fourth voyage) crossed from the Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean at Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). He then voyaged onwards to New Zealand, Tonga, The Cook Islands and Tahiti.
In the background are seashells based on a French engraving from the early 1700s.
